“Starting in October 2025, non-EU nationals traveling to the Schengen Area will be required to provide fingerprints and facial recognition data at border control for entry and exit. This new Entry/Exit System (EES) will replace manual passport stamping and aims to modernize border management, enhance security, and better track overstays.”
Expected launch date is October 12, 2025.
Pre-registration is not required. This is NOT the ETIAS system.
Key aspects of the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES):
- Biometric Data Collection:
All non-EU nationals will have their fingerprints and facial images captured at border control during their first EES registration. - Data Storage:
This biometric data will be stored for three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first, and will be used for subsequent border crossings within the Schengen Area. - Streamlined Future Entries:
Subsequent entries will involve verification of the existing biometric data, potentially speeding up border crossings. - No Pre-Travel Application:
No pre-travel application is required for the EES; the process happens at the border. - Potential for Longer Initial Queues:
While the EES aims to streamline border crossings, initial queues may be longer as travelers adjust to the new system. - Compliance with 90/180-day Rule:
The EES will help ensure compliance with the 90/180-day rule for visa-free travelers. - Phased Rollout:
The ESS is expected to launch October 12, 2025. The EES will be phased in over a 6-month period, becoming fully mandatory on April 10, 2026. - Not Required for All Travelers:
The EES is specifically for non-EU nationals traveling to the Schengen Area for short stays (up to 90 days in a 180-day period). - No Cost for EES:
The EES is free for travelers; there is no fee associated with the system.
